The Species Problem article Flashcards
What is the Species Problem?
questions that evolutionary biologist think about when speciating organisms. How do you know when to call on species a different one compared to another?
What is the nature of the problem?
Asexually reproducing organisms are quite different from sexually reproducing organisms. but can all species in sexually reproducing organisms be the same kind?
What is the complications between Species concept and species taxa?
These two phenomena are completely two different things. It becomes a problem when an author cofounds the two of them together.
Why doesnt typological species concept work?
It fails to answer Darwin’s question of “why?”. There is nothing about the reasons of discrete reproductively isolated species in nature. There is nothing about the biological significance of species.
What is the BSC?
The biological species concept
What does it mean to be a species?
A population or group of populations is a species according to BSC if it form a reproductive community and does not reproduce with other such communities.
Why is BSC still attacked?
Misunderstanding of scientists about the difference between the species concept and the species taxon.
Why isnt the ecological species concept workable?
- Because they differ in their niche occupations.
- An ecological species definition would require that these populations would be called a different species but they are not.
- Two sympatric species seem to occupy the same niche, in conflict with Gause’s rule.
