what is a Chrism?
the oil used in baptism, confirmation and ordination
what is Lay ministries?
special ways of serving the Church open to the non-ordained
what is Contrition?
sorrow for the sin committed and deciding not to commit the sin again
what is Penance?
an action showing contrition
what is Absolution?
the words and actions of a priest assuring the pardon of sins
what are the 7 sacraments?
baptism, confirmation, the eucharist, reconciliation, anointing of the sick, marriage, holy orders
what is Baptism?
original sin with which is washed away when the child is born, the water symbolises the washing away of sin
why is Baptism important?
- the Catechism teaches that without this, a person can’t receive the other sacraments
- makes a person a full member of the Church, ready to begin a new life in the Holy Spirit
what is Confirmation?
confirmed person has fully joined the Catholic Church, the laying on of hands symbolises the gift of the Holy Spirit
why is Confirmation important?
- it gives the strength of the Spirit to live the Christian life
- only those who are confirmed can take on lay ministries
what is the Eucharist?
it unites them with Christ
why is the Eucharist important?
its a memorial of the death and resurrection of Jesus
what is Reconciliation?
the priest gives a penance and the grace to make it easier to live a Christian life and receive the Eucharist
why is Reconciliation important?
forgives a person’s sins and brings them into a closer relationship with God
what is the Anointing of the Sick?
gives seriously ill people the strength to face serious illness and death
