what is Apostolic succession?
the line of bishops going back to the Apostles
what is Apostolic tradition?
the oral Gospel passed on by the Apostles to the Church
what is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary?
the belief that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven
what is the Conciliar magisterium?
the Church meeting and working as a Council of Bishops with the Pope
what is the Papal infallibility?
when the Pope speaks authoritatively on a disputed matter of doctrine
what is Pontifical?
relating to the office of the Pope as the head of the Church
why is Apostolic tradition important?
- gives the Church the authority of Jesus
- means the teaching of the Church is the teaching that was given to the Apostles by Jesus
- guarantees that the teaching Catholics follow is true faith
why is Apostolic succession important?
- means that the Pope today has the same authority that Christ gave to St Peter
- proves when the Pope and bishops give the teaching of the Church in the magisterium, they speak as the Apostles chosen by Jesus
why is the Magisterium important for Catholics?
- there is no higher authority for Catholics
- gives Catholics answers to issues that didn’t exist in the time of the Apostles
- proves clear guidelines for Catholics on what to believe and how to behave
what is the role of the Pope in the Catholic Church?
- lead the worldwide Church and make sure it is cared for
- organise the magisterium and make sure it is kept up to date
- give guidance to Catholics about current issues
what is a Source of wisdom for Scripture, tradition and the magisterium?
The Catechism says, ‘The task of interpreting the word of God has been entrusted to the Magisterium, that is to the Pope and bishops in communion with him’.
