what is Eschatology?
religious beliefs about death, judgement and life after death
what is Heaven?
a place of infinite peace in the presence of God
what is Hell?
a place of eternal separation from the love of God
what is the Immortality of the soul?
the idea that the soul lives on after the death of the body
what is Purgatory?
a preparation for heaven, a place of purification and healing
what does the Church teach in the Catechism?
- when people die, they are judged by God
- Christians who are perfectly purified will go to heaven
- very evil people who have totally rejected God will go to hell
what do Catholics believe about heaven and hell?
that its perfection and it’s eternal peace with God. the Church believes in hell
what are Non-Catholic Christian views about life after death?
do not believe in purgatory because it is based on the teaching of the Church rather than the Bible
what are Evangelical Protestant Christian views about life after death?
believe when people die, their soul remains in the grave until the final judgement when born-against Christians will go to heave, the rest to hell
what are Liberal Protestant views about life after death?
- believe when the body dies, the soul leaves the body to live with God in a spirit world.
- they believe in the immortality of the soul is based on the fact that after his ascension, Jesus became a spirit and went to the spirit world
why is belief in life after death important for Catholics?
- they believe they will be judged by God so it gives them a motive to live a good Christian life by loving God and their neighbour
- they believe that sin can prevent people from going to heaven so they will try to avoid committing sin
- those beliefs give their lives meaning and purpose
what is a Source of wisdom about Eschatology?
The Catechism teaches that those who sincerely seek God but are not Catholic may gain eternal life
