the major virtues - justice, prudence, temperance and fortitude
what is an Encyclical?
a letter addressed by the Pope to all the bishops of the Church
what is LEDC?
less economically developed countries
what is Reconciliation?
bringing together people who were opposed to one another
what is Vocation?
the calling of a person has to live in a certain way
what is Catholic social teaching based on?
- Jesus’ command to love your neighbour as yourself
- the teaching of the Bible and Catechism is that God wants the world to be ruled justly
- the belief that Christians have a vocation to serve God and love their neighbour
what is St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP)?
help to relieve poverty and suffering in the UK by:
- regular visiting and personal care for the lonely, bereaved and housebound
- diocesan children’s camps for children from poor or broken homes
- drop-in centres for lonely people to have opportunities to socialise
what is Catholic Fund for Overseas Development (CAFOD)?
try to end world poverty by:
- promoting long-term development so that LEDCs can become self-supporting
- speaking out on behalf of poor communities to bring social justice, such as the Trade Justice Campaign
- promoting Fairtrade products to bring better prices, decent working, local sustainability etc
what is a Source of wisdom for CST?
St Paul said in Romans 14, ‘Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification’
