what is Non-conformists?
English Protestants who are not members of the Church of England
what is the Penitential rite?
the confession and absolution at the beginning of the Mass
what is the Tabernacle?
a safe place in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept
what is Transubstantiation?
the belief that during the Mass the bread and win become of the body and blood of Jesus throughout the power of the Holy Spirit
what is Liturgical worship?
set prayers and rituals so that everything follows the same format
what is the Introductory rite?
makes Catholics aware that they are sinners and includes the Penitential Rite
what is the Liturgy of the Word?
contains Bible readings when all stand for the Gospel reading as it contains the words of Christ
what is the Liturgy of the Eucharist?
when the bread and wine are brought to the altar to be offered to God, the Eucharistic Prayer then re-enacts the Last Supper and the bread wine are changed by transubstantiation into the body and blood of Christ
what is the Concluding rite?
when people give thanks for what they have received and the congregation are given a blessing to help them in the week ahead
why is Mass important and significant to Catholics?
- the Eucharist is a sacrament which gives grace to live good lives and grow closer to God
- the Mass is a celebration of the resurrection, showing Catholics that there is eternal life
- Jesus commanded attendance at Mass when he said at the Last Supper, ‘Do this in memory of me.’
what special things take place during Non-conformist non-liturgical worship?
- extempore prayers (prayers without preparation)
- emphasis on the sermon, relating the Bible reading to modern life
- believes non liturgical worship allows worship to come from people’s hearts and can be adapted to meet their needs
what are Catholics, Orthodox and Anglicans views on liturgical worship?
- believe it allows the worshipper to think about the words and develop greater understanding
- the familiar rituals help them feel closer to God
what is a Source of wisdom about Catholic liturgical worship?
Lumen Gentium says that ‘through taking the consecrated host we become one with Christ and are united with each other.’
