The Respiratory System Flashcards
What are vibrissae?
Nose hairs
What are pleurae?
Membranes surrounding the lungs
What are the 3 types of pleurae?
- Visceral: adjacent to lungs
- Parietal: adjacent to chest wall
- Intrapleural: between the 2
Which pleurae contains fluid?
Intrapleural pleurae
How do the pleurae affect breathing?
Pressure differentials created across the pleurae drive breathing
How is the pressure differential created during inhalation?
- Diaphragm and intercostal muscles expand the thoracic cavity
- Intrapleural volume increases = pressure decreases
- Lung volume increases = pressure decreases
- Air is pulled in
What is emphysema? What are the symptoms?
Destruction of alveolar walls –> decrease in elastic recoil –> exhalation is difficult
What is the equation of the bicarbonate buffer system?
CO2 (g) + H2O(l) –> H2CO3(aq) –> H+ + HCO3- (aq)
What is the total lung capacity?
Max volume of air: 6-7L
What is the residual volume?
Min volume of air left when one exhales completely
What is the vital capacity?
Difference between TLC and RV
What is the tidal volume?
Volume of air inhaled/exhales in a normal breath
What is the expiratory reserve volume?
Volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled after a normal breath
What is the inspiratory reserve volume?
Volume of air that can be forcibly inhaled after a normal breath
What muscles are responsible for inhalation?
external intercostal and diaphragm
