Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What is the role of estrogen?
establishing the endometrium
What is the role of progesterone?
Maintaining the endometrium
What hormone is responsible for causing ovulation?
LH
What is the role of FSH?
Stimulating the development of the ovarian follicles, which secrete estrogen
What is the role of LH?
Stimulating the corpus luteum, which secretes estrogen and progesterone
Where are LH and FSH secreted from?
Anterior pituitary
What stimulates LH and FSH secretion?
GnRH secretion from hypothalamus
What is the corpus luteum?
the remnant of the ruptured follicle
How do estrogen and progesterone affect LH and FSH secretion?
Negative feedback
Describe the hCG levels
they start as the blastula implants itself → analog of LH, so it stimulates LH receptors → maintains corpus luteum (very important during first trimester) → by the second trimester the hCG levels decline because the placenta has grown to a sufficient size to secrete progesterone and estrogen by itself.
What is the role of hCG?
Maintain the corpus luteum
What happens during menopause?
Ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone –> FSH and LH levels rise
What is the role of FSH in males?
stimulating sertoli cells and triggers spermatogenesis
What is the role of LH in males?
causing the interstitial cells to produce testosterone
What phase of meiosis is the egg at upon ovulation? What is it called?
Metaphase II
Secondary oocyte
