Embryogenesis Flashcards
What are teratogens?
Substances that interfere with development
What are morphogens?
They promote development down a specific cell line
What happens to the neural folds?
Fuse to become neural tube –> Becomes CNS
What happens to the neural crest cells?
PNS + specific cell types in other tissues (calcitonin producing cells in thyroid, and melanocytes for example)
What happens during the 1st trimester?
organogenesis
What happens during the 2nd trimester? 4 things
- Tremendous growth
- Movement begins
- Face forms
- Digits elongate
What happens during the third trimester? 3 things
- Growth
- Brain development
- Transfer of antibodies
What are deustrosomes?
Blastopore becomes anus –> anus to mouth formation of the gut tube in humans
What cells form the placenta?
Trophoblasts
What germ layer is the notochord made of?
Mesoderm
What is the developmental stage with the greatest nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio?
blastula
What is cell differentiation caused by? What does the cell be differentiated need to be?
caused by inducers: usually growth factors.
the cell being induced = responder → MUST BE COMPETENT
What are the stages following embryo formation
- Morula
- Blastula
- Gastrula (3 primary germ layers)
- Neurulation
What happens for the zygote to become an embryo?
First cleavage of the cell; no longer unicellular
