A sex cell
What is fertilisation?
The fusion between male and female gametes to produce a zygote
What is the role of the male reproductive system?
To produce sperm
To deliver the sperm to the female body
What is the role of the female reproductive system?
To produce eggs
To hold and nourish the developing baby during pregnancy
To give birth to the baby
What is puberty?
Puberty is the time when the sex organs mature and other physical and emotional changes take place
What is the menstrual cycle?
A series of changes which take place in the female body to prepare it for pregnancy
When is fertilisation most likely to occur?
During the fertile period of the menstrual cycle
What is implantation?
The attachment of the embryo to the womb lining
What is contraception?
The prevention of fertilisation and implantation
What are chromosomes made of?
DNA and protein
What are the 4 stages of birth?
- Bag of amniotic fluid breaks
- Muscles in the womb wall contract to widen the cervix
- The baby’s head is pushed out of the vagina
- The umbilical cord is clamped and the baby breathes on its own for the first time
