The Cell Flashcards
What are the three main parts of the cell?
Cell membrane, cytoplasm and the nucleus
What is the cell membrane?
The protective skin around the cell that controls what enters and exits the cell
What is cytoplasm?
A watery substance where the chemical reactions necessary for life take place
What is the nucleus?
The control centre containing the chemical DNA. It controls the chemicals the cell will make and is involved in how the cell divides.
Name 3 differences between animal and plant cells
Plant cells have a cell wall outside the membrane for shape and support, animal cells don’t
Plant cells have chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll, animal cells don’t
Plant cells have large vacuoles which are small spaces in the cytoplasm which store things and give support, animal cells have small vacuoles
How do you prepare a slide from plant tissue and sketch cells under magnification?
- Cut a small piece of onion
- Peel the inner skin using forceps
- Place the skin on a drop of water
- Lower a cover slip onto the slide using a mounted needle
- Examine cells under microscope
- Stain cells with iodine and examine again
- Draw a labelled diagram of one cell at each objective lens
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells with the same function
What is an organ?
An organ is made of many different tissues working together
What is a system?
A system is a group of organs working together
