The Digestive System And Enzymes Flashcards
What is digestion?
Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small soluble food molecules
Name and explain the two types of digestion
Physical - where food is broken down by the teeth and by the churning action of the muscles in the digestive system
Chemical - where the food is broken down by enzymes
What are enzymes? Give an example of one
Biological catalysts - Amylase
What is the name of a substance an enzyme acts on?
Substrate
How do you investigate the action of amylase on starch
- Have 2 test tubes of starch and amylase and 2 test tubes of starch and water.
- Boil all test tubes in water for 5 minutes
- Test a tube of starch and amylase and a tube of starch and water for the presence of starch using iodine solution. The starch and amylase tube should have no starch
- Test a tube of starch and amylase and a tube of starch and water for the presence of a reducing sugar with Benedict’s Solution. The starch and amylase tube should show the presence of a reducing sugar
Name the 4 stages of nutrition in order
EDAG
Eating
Digestion
Absorption
Getting rid of waste
What is the function of the liver?
Produces bile and helps digestion of fats. It sorts and stores some digested food
What is the function of the pancreas?
Produces digestive enzymes
What is the function of the large intestine?
Takes water back into the bloodstream leaving solid waste
What is the function of the small intestine?
More juices containing enzymes are added to help digest the food. Fully digested food is absorbed into the bloodstream
What is the function of the stomach?
Produces digestive juices
