Plant Reproduction Flashcards
Name and explain the two types of plant reproduction
Asexual - one parent - plants, fungi, bacteria
Sexual - two parents - fertilisation
What are the male and female reproductive organs in a flower?
Male - Stamen
Female - Carpel
What are the parts of the stamen?
The filament is the stalk which supports the anther
The anther produces the pollen grains which contain the male gamete
What are the parts of the carpel?
The stigma is the place where pollen lands
The style connects the stigma to the ovary
The ovary contains ovules which produce the female gamete, the egg
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from the stamen to the carpel
What is fertilisation?
Fertilisation is the fusion between male and female gametes to create a zygote
What are the four parts of the seed?
Plumule (shoot)
Radicle (root)
Testa (seed coat)
Food supply
What is germination?
The growth of a seed into a new plant
What are the 3 factors required for germination?
Warmth, water, oxygen
How do you investigate the conditions necessary for germination?
- Get four test tubes
- Fill one test tube with moist cotton wool and seeds
- Fill another tube with dry cotton wool and seeds
- Fill another tube with moist cotton wool and seeds but put it in a fridge
- Fill another tube with cotton wool, cool boiled water, oil and seeds
- Only the test tube with moist cotton wool and seeds should germinate
