Magnetism Flashcards
What is a magnet?
A magnet is a piece of metal that can attract other substances to it
How do you demonstrate he attraction and repulsion of magnets?
Hang one bar magnet in a paper stirrup on a retort stand. Bring the North Pole of a second magnet to the South Pole of the hanging one and they should attract.
Which poles repel and attract?
Like poles repel each other; unlike attract
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is the space around a magnet over which it has a magnetic effect
What is a compass?
A compass is a magnet which is free to rotate and indicate direction
How do you demonstrate that the earth has a magnetic field and to locate north and south direction?
Suspend a magnet in a paper stirrup on a retort stand and give it a slight twirl. Note the direction it is pointing it. Repeat several times
How do you show the magnetic effect of a current?
Hold a straight wire parallel to a compass needle and close the switch. The compass needle moves at right angles to the wire as the magnetic effect of the wire is greater than that of the earth.
