Plant Structure And Support Flashcards
What does xylem transport?
Water and minerals UP the plant
What does phloem transport?
Food up AND down the plant
What is the function of the root?
To anchor the plant
To take in water and minerals
Store food
What is the function of stem?
Hold up leaves
Carry water and minerals
Carry food
What is the function of the leaves?
Photosynthesis
Exchange gases
Loss of water vapour
What is the function of the flower?
Sexual reproduction
Produce seeds
How do you show that water vapour is lost from a plant?
- Set up a seedling in water and oil in one test tube and just water and oil in another test tube.
- Mark the level of water
- Check again after 3 days and record results
How do you show the path of water through plant tissue?
- Set up celery in a beaker with red food dye.
- Rinse the celery after one/two days
- Cut a piece of celery and cut across the stem.
- Observe the veins of the celery which should be red
What is transpiration?
The loss of water vapour from the surface of a plant
How do you show that water evaporates from the surface of a leaf by transpiration?
- Cover a watered pot plant with leaves on it with a plastic bag.
- Cover a watered pot plant with no leaves on it with a plastic bag
- Leave for a few hours
- Test any liquid formed with anhydrous copper sulfate
