How do you make a mixture using iron and sulfur and then change the mixture into the compound iron sulfide?
A
- Mix 7g of iron filings and 4g of sulfur in a pestle and mortar
- Put a magnet to the mixture, the filings should attract
- Put the mixture into a test tube on a retort stand
- Heat the mixture until it begins to glow. This indicates a chemical reaction taking place
- Continue hearing until the mixture no longer glows
- Once the contents cool, remove them from the test tube and pick out several pieces with forceps
- Hold a magnet to the iron sulfide, it should not be attracted
