Q

How do you make a mixture using iron and sulfur and then change the mixture into the compound iron sulfide?

A
  1. Mix 7g of iron filings and 4g of sulfur in a pestle and mortar
  2. Put a magnet to the mixture, the filings should attract
  3. Put the mixture into a test tube on a retort stand
  4. Heat the mixture until it begins to glow. This indicates a chemical reaction taking place
  5. Continue hearing until the mixture no longer glows
  6. Once the contents cool, remove them from the test tube and pick out several pieces with forceps
  7. Hold a magnet to the iron sulfide, it should not be attracted
