Carbon Dioxide Flashcards
1
Q
What is the word equation for the preparation of carbon dioxide?
A
Calcium carbonate + dilute hydrochloric acid —> calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide
2
Q
What is the balanced chemical equation for the preparation of carbon dioxide?
A
CaCO³ + 2HCl—> CaCl² + H²O + CO²
3
Q
How do you prepare a sample of carbon dioxide?
A
- Set up dilute hydrochloride acid in a dropping funnel onto marble chips in a Büchner flask.
- The gas produced goes through tubing DOWN into a gas jar showing the upward displacement of air
4
Q
What are 5 ways that you can examine the properties of carbon dioxide?
A
- Note that it is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas
- Place a lighted taper in the jar of carbon dioxide. Note that it goes out. Carbon dioxide does not support combustion
- Bubble carbon dioxide through a test tube containing limewater (calcium hydroxide) which turns milky. The reaction forms calcium carbonate or chalk
- Pour carbon dioxide DOWN onto a lit tea light. The candle extinguishes showing that carbon dioxide is denser than air and does not support combustion.
- Bubble carbon dioxide through water. Place blue litmus paper in the water which turns red showing carbon dioxide dissolves water to form a slightly acidic solution
