The Breathing System Flashcards
What is the function of the larynx?
Responsible for making sounds
What is the function of the trachea?
Allows air to pass in and out of our lungs
What is the function of rings of cartilage?
Keep the air tubes open
What is the function of the bronchus?
The tube which carries air from the trachea to the lungs
What is the function of the lungs
The breathing organ
What is the function of the bronchioles
Thin tubes which carry air within the lungs
What is the function of the intercostal muscles?
Cause the rib cage to move up and down during breathing
What is the function of alveoli?
Tiny air sacs covered by a network of narrow blood vessels. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the alveoli
What is the function of the diaphragm?
A sheet of muscle which moves up and down during breathing causing air to move in and out of the lungs
What is gaseous exchange?
Gaseous exchange occurs when oxygen from the air is swapped with carbon dioxide from the body in the alveoli
How do you compare the carbon dioxide level of inhaled and exhaled air?
- Set up two test tubes with limewater and stoppers with tubes in them
- Suck in air through the short tube of one test tube (represents inhaled air)
- Blow out air through the long tube of the other test tube (represents exhaled air)
- Record which tube the limewater goes milky in first
- The level of carbon dioxide in exhaled air is greater than the level of carbon dioxide in inhaled air
