Who was Ulrych Zwingli?
A German-Swiss reformer in Zurich, an ordained priest inspired by Luther.
What did Zwingli preach against?
Buying + selling indulgences, pilgrimages & veneration of relics, fasting during Lent, the use of images & music in Church, priestly celibacy,
What was Zwingli known for?
Handing sausages out in church, forcibly closing the monasteries, preaching Scripture as most important, establishing welfare programs, Swiss nationalism.
Why did Zwingli oppress Radical Reformers?
Because he backed infant baptism, and many Radical Reformers were anabaptist.
Who was John Calvin?
A French-Swiss reformer from Geneva. Widely travelled and widely studied.
What is Calvin Known for?
The Consistory System, his book The Institutes of the Christian Religion, Double Predestination, interpretation of the Eucharist as that of Spiritual Presence.
What is the Consistory System?
Had four roles: Clergy/Pastors (Preaching), Doctors/Scholars (Theology), Elders/Presbyters (Police), and Deacons (Charitable Organizations).
What was Double Predestination?
Not only did God select some believers for Heaven, he also selected others to damnation.
What is Transubstantiation?
The belief that the Eucharist becomes the blood + body of Christ; partaken of every week so that we may incorporate ourselves into his Body.
What is Consubstantiation?
The belief that the Eucharist holds both the physical substance and Christ’s Substance; a Lutheran belief.
What is Spiritual Presence?
The belief that no substance of Christ is in the bread and wine, but rather the Spirit is present, recieved by those who have faith.
What is Memorial?
The belief that the Eucharist is only symbolic, and partaking in it commemorates Jesus’ sacrifice.
