The Eschaton Flashcards
What are the 4 key events of the End Times?
The 2nd Coming of Christ (Rapture), The General Resurrection of the Dead, Final Judgement, Establishment of the Kingdom of God.
What is one major event associated with Christ’s Second Coming?
The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse: Death, Famine, War, Conquest (aka Jesus).
What is the Rapture?
Believers taken up to Heaven before the end of the world, supposedly to be spared trials. There is debate on whether it will happen pre, post, or during tribulation.
What is “Millenniallism?”
The belief that Christ’s second coming will be accompanied by a binding of Satan for 1000 years before the 2nd General resurrection.
What do Christians use as evidence for their Eschatology?
Jewish messianic expectations, passages in Scripture, the Book of Revelation.
What are the Tribulations?
God’s wrath in the form of plagues and horrors beset upon the earth, occurring either before, during, or after the Rapture.
What is the General Resurrection?
The second Resurrection of the Dead, in preparation for Final Judgement.
What is the Final Judgement?
The condemning of all souls to either heaven or hell. Satan thrown in the pit of Fire (Hades).
What is the Establishment of the Kingdom of God?
A new heaven and new earth created by God - the old passes away.
What caused the rise of debate around anticipatory vs particular judgement?
The assumption that one received one’s judgement immediately after death and went to heaven or hell to await Final Judgement: that is, one went to the destination one was bound to go to for eternity.
What is the controversy around the Kingdom of God?
Whether it will be a physical kingdom on our current earth (in which case it could already be here) or whether it is a metaphysical place.
What inspired the belief in Purgatory?
That everyone who died immediately received their reward: those who were not good enough to go to heaven, but were too good for hell were expected to experience short-term suffering in order to receive sanctification.
Why is the General Resurrection also called the 2nd Resurrection?
Prior to the General Resurrection, there will be the resurrection of the Saints.
