Who spearheaded the English Reformation and why?
King Henry VIII, because he wanted to annul his marriage to his first wife, and the Pope refused.
What was the Book of Common Prayer?
A number of prayer books written during the reign of King Edward VI, Henry VIII’s son. They were books that contained a number of common liturgies and orders of Mass in an effort to unify the English Church.
Who was Bloody Mary?
The first daughter of Henry VIII, who came to power after Edward VI died. She needed to be Catholic in order for her claim to the throne to be legitimate, so she persecuted many reformers when she was on the throne.
Why was Queen Elizabeth I Reformist?
In order to legitimize her claim to the throne, because otherwise her father’s second marriage was invalid.
How did Elizabeth institute reform?
She chose a middle-of-the-road style in order to avoid turmoil. She proposed a Catholic style of worship that downplayed sacerdotal functions.
What is the Act of Supremacy?
An act that overturned 10 of Mary’s revisions and established Elizabeth “supreme governor” of the Church of England.
What is the Act of Uniformity?
Elizabeth’s order of uniform worship using the Book of Common Prayer.
What change did Elizabeth make to the Book of Common Prayer?
She combined two different Eucharist readings to appeal to both Catholics and Reformers.
What were the 39 Articles?
Articles of faith released expressing the middle-of-the way style of Elizabethan Reform, styled from Thomas Cranmer’s 42 Articles.
Who was Thomas Cranmer?
The Archbishop of Canterbury and the leader of the English Reform during the reign of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and for a short time, Mary I (before he was executed).
What is the Elizabethan Religious Settlement?
The Act of Supremacy, Act of Unity, and other religious and political arrangements made for England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
