What books make up the Tanakh?
The Torah, The Nevi’im, and the Kethuvim.
What constitutes the Torah?
The first 5 books of the Christian bible, aka the “Law” book.
What are the Mitzvot?
“Commandments” found in the Torah.
What constitutes the Nevi’im?
The books of the Prophets.
What constitutes the Kethuvim?
History, psalms, wisdom literature, and the eschatology.
What is the Eschaton and what is it related to?
Apocalyptic writings, related to messianic expectations.
Explain the Covenant Relationship.
God as creator expects certain behaviour with his creation. When people don’t actualize God’s expectations, bad things happen.
Who was Abraham?
The father of the Abrahamic faiths, the first to establish a covenant with God.
What was Henotheism?
A belief in multiple gods, but a devotion to one’s home deity or deities. One’s deity is considered the best of all the gods.
Who was Moses?
The man responsible for leading Israel out of Egypt and re-establishing God’s Covenant. Abrahamic Covenant - > Mosaic Covenant.
Explain the Messiah.
Means “Anointed One”, reference to Kingship, expected to have a special role in Jewish society.
What events led up to Babyonian Exile?
Splitting into 2 kingdoms: Israel and Judah. Worshipping of other gods supposedly brought down punishment in the form of conquer by Babylon.
How did Babylonian exile affect Israel?
Zoastrian influences brought about a belief in resurrection of the dead.
Why is King Cyrus important in Jewish History?
Persian king who allowed a return to Jewish homeland: referred to as a Messiah.
Why is Jerusalem significant?
The city where the Kings of Judah resided, home to the temple.
