What is the Council of Trent?
A council of the Catholic Church in Trent, Italy, between 1545-1563.
What prompted the Council of Trent?
The Protestant Reformation.
What did the Council of Trent do?
It issued condemnations of Protestant “heresies”, made the Latin Vulgate the official Bible, reformed discipline and administration within the Church, and re-affirmed popular practises of the laypeople.
What were some of the results of Catholic Counter-Reform?
Humanistically-educated Clergy, the foundation of seminaries, indulgences were penance-only, the church slowly became less political.
Who was Pope Paul III?
The pope who called the Council of Trent and initiated the Counter-Reformation. He also recognized new monastic orders, such as the Jesuits.
What is the Tridentine Mass?
A new liturgy practised by the Catholic Church from 1570 to 1962; rigidified mass so that the priest stood in front of the congregation, at the altar, with his back to the laypeople.
Define Christmas.
Christian Holy Day celebrating Christ’s birth. Followed by Epiphany, which celebrates the visit of the Magi.
Define Easter.
A number of holidays culminating in Easter Sunday, which celebrates Jesus’ death and resurrection.
What days are involved in the Easter season?
Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday.
What is Lent?
A period of fasting leading up to Easter.
What is Pentecost?
A holiday 50 days after Easter Sunday; commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.
What is the Transfiguration?
The celebration of Jesus’ transfiguration in front of his apostles prior to his death.
