The Parts of a Leaf Flashcards
Lamina
It is the thin, flat part of the leaf that is typically green in color. It is divided into three parts:
i) leaf apex – the tip of the leaf blade,
ii) leaf margin
iii) leaf veins
helps plants to prepare their food using raw materials like water, carbon dioxide, and minerals through photosynthesis
performs evaporation from the aerial parts of a plant by a process known as transpiration
Petiole
It connects leaf to stem or branch. It is also known as leaf stalk.
provides support to the leaf and keeps it erect
transports water and nutrients absorbed by the roots to the leaves
transports photosynthetic products from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Midrib
The central, thick, linear vein that runs along the length of a leaf is called midrib.
it is the main vein which transfers water and minerals from stem to different parts of leaves.
Margin
the edge of the leaf
there’s many types of leaf margin.
gives and limits the shape of the leaf
leaf margin is the boundary of a leaf of a plant.
Branch vein
secondary veins that originated from the midrib and ran toward the leaf margin.
transports water from the petiole throughout the lamina.
Network of Veins
The function of the network of veins in a leaf is to transport water, minerals and food. Also, it provides support to the leaf.
the small channels or capillaries
smallest veins
Apex
Apex of the leaf is the tip of the leaf
The leaf apex is a protruding part of a leaf where water droplets accumulate, and droplet separation occurs during drainage.
