Main Blood Vessels and Associated Organs Flashcards
neck
jugular vein and carotid artery
arms
anterior vena cava
aorta
lungs
pulmonary vein- carries oxygenated blood to the heart
pulmonary artery- only artery that carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
heart
right(vein side) atrium left (artery side) atrium
right ventricle left ventricle
posterior vena cava and aorta
liver
hepatic vein and hepatic artery
intestines
hepatic portal vein connects the intestines to the liver (digestions, products of digestion) mesenteric artery
kidneys
renal vein renal artery
legs
iliac vein iliac artery
double circulatory system
in one complete journey, blood travels/flows through the heart twice.
diastole
0.4 seconds, cardiac muscles are relaxed, heart becomes larger as blood flows intot the atria and ventricles fill with blood, semi lunar valves shut, atrioventricular valves tricuspid and bicuspid are open and so are the valves in the viens, vena cavae and pulmonary vein
atrial systole
takes 0.1 seconds
cardiac msucles in the walls of atria contract, muscles of ventrciles relax, semi lunar valves are shut, vein valves (vena cavae and pulmonary vein) are shut as well and the atria contracts pumping blood into ventricles
ventricular systole
takes 0.3 seconds
cardiac muscles of the ventrciles contracts, atria relaxes due to pressure, atrioventricular valves shut, semi lunar valves open to pump blood to the lungs and body, the pulmonary vein valve and vena cavae valves are open and flow into atria, since atrioventricular valves are shut
sino-atrial node or pacemaker
group of specialised CARDIAC MUSCLE cells, in the wall of the right atrium that begins and maintains the heart beat
artery
away from heart
vein
towards the heart
