Autotrophic vs Heterotrophic Nutrition Flashcards
Autotrophic Nutrition: requires energy
one in which an organism uses simple inorganic compounds such as water, co2 and minerals to manufacture complex organic food substances such carbs, protein, lipids and vitamins.
e.g. Plants manufacture their own food by the process of photosynthesis.
Such organisms are called Autotrophs.
done by plants and some bacteria
Heterotrophic Nutrition
occurs in animals, fungi and most bacteria.
involves organisms (animals) obtaining ready-made organic food from their environment Called Heterotrophs.
Types of Heterotrophic Nutrition
Holozoic Nutrition (human)
Saprophytic Nutrition (bacteria, fungi)
Parasitic Nutrition (love vine)
saprophytic nutrition
the nutrition mode in which organisms consume organic food in the form of dead and decomposed matter.
Example – Bread mold or Rhizopus, Mucor or pin mold, Agaricus (mushroom), and yeast.
holozoic nutrition
the organisms obtain organic food by consuming other organisms. the complex organic food is ingested then digested into simple organic substances within the body of the organisms.
example humans
parasitic nutrition
is a type of nutrition in which organisms live on or inside the bodies of their hosts and feed on them.
