Diseases associated with the circulatory system Flashcards
Heart valve disease
Heart valve disease can affect any of your four heart valves. These are the doors that separate different parts of your heart and manage blood flow. A diseased valve strains your heart. Over time, this can lead to complications like heart failure or sudden cardiac death.
coronary artery disease
caused by plaque buildup in the wall of the arteries that supply blood to the heart (called coronary arteries). Plaque is made up of cholesterol deposits. Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time. This hinders blood flow.
high blood pressure
common condition that affects the body’s arteries. It’s also called hypertension. If you have high blood pressure, the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls is consistently too high. The heart has to work harder to pump blood.
conary arteries
supply blood to the heart muscle
beacuse the walls of the heart are so thick that food and oxygen will not be able to diffuse to all the muscle in the walls of the heart quickly.
like any tissue and organ needs a constant supply of nutrients and oxygen, without oxygen, it cannot continue to contract and relax.
if a coronary artery gets blocked, by a blood clot, the cardiac muscles run short of blood, oxygen supply becomes low, the heart cannot respire and the heart lacks sufficient energy and cannot contract resulting in heart attack or cardiac arrest.
