The neuropsychology of emotion 14.02.23 Flashcards
What system controls emotion?
The limbic system
What are the structures in the limbic system?
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
- Amygdala
- Hippocampus
- Cingulate gyrus
What does the orbitofrontal cortex control?
Appraisal
What do the medial and lateral sections of the orbitofrontal cortex control?
Medial: Reward (the more pleasant, the more medial part is activated)
Lateral: Punishment/ non-reward
What are the inputs and outputs of the orbitofrontal cortex?
Input: Ventral cortical streams (identity)
Output: Anterior cingulate gyrus (defining behavioural response)
What does the amygdala control?
Appraisal too
- Conditioned responses to harmful stimuli
- Facial expression recognition
What does the cingulate cortex control?
Action-outcome learning
What does the anterior part of the cingulate cortex control?
The outcome
- punishment and reward
What does the posterior part of the cingulate cortex control?
Action
- Input from parietal lobes
- Output into hippocampus
What does the middle part of the cingulate cortex control?
Action also
- Output to premotor areas
What does the Ventromedial prefrontal cortex control?
Reward-related decision-making
- Synaptic activity goes up and down depending on how rewarding something is
What are autonomic responses modulated by?
- Orbitofrontal cortex
- Amygdala
