Neuroimaging: An Overview Of Brain Structure 15.02.23 Flashcards
What is the sylvian fissure?
The lateral sulcus
- The lateral sulcus is a deep fissure in each hemisphere that separates the frontal and parietal lobes from the temporal lobe
What is a cistern?
- An anatomic space in the meninges of the brain
- The space is situated between the two meninges, the arachnoid mater and the pia mater
- These cisterns are filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
What is aqueduct stenosis?
Aqueductal stenosis is a narrowing of the aqueduct of Sylvius which blocks the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricular system.
What is the basal ganglia?
The function of the basal ganglia is to fine-tune the voluntary movements. They do so by receiving the impulses for the upcoming movement from the cerebral cortex, which they process and adjust. They convey their instructions to the thalamus, which then relays this information back to the cortex.
What is the fornix?
The fornix is a C-shaped bundle of nerve fibres in the brain that acts as the major output tract of the hippocampus.
