Limbic system, hippocampus and papez circuit (Bigppt) Flashcards
What is Berry Aneurysms?
- Most common type of inter-cranial aneurysm
- Most common at ACA
- produces subarachnoid haemorrhage
What is the function of the Papez circuit?
Controls emotional expression and significant role in memory functions
What is the pathway of the papez circuit?
- Hippocampus
- fornix
- mamillary bodies
- mammillothalamic tract
- thalamus
- cingulate gyrus
- para-hippocampal gyrus
- hippocampus (PES)
What are the 3 layers of the cerebellar cortex?
- Molecular (outer) fibre-rich
- Purkinje (middle) vast branching pattern
- Granule (inner) many small cells (granule)
What happens when cerebellar is damaged?
- Movement becomes jerky, erratic and poorly coordinated
- Voluntary movements lose fluidity
- Looks like they are drunk
What is the tectum of the midbrain?
- posterior to cerebral aqueduct
- Pineal gland superficial to these
What is the cerebral peduncle of the midbrain?
- Paired
- Oculomotor nerve exists between the peduncles
- Optic tract runs around superior border
Where is the cavernous sinus?
Part of the basal ganglia
- Mostly in pars compacta
What is the cavernous sinus function?
- It is the dopaminergic centre of the brain (basal ganglia)
- crucial in facilitating movement
Where is the tegmentum + function?
In the pons. Responsible for arousal and attentiveness
What is the locus coeruleus?
Stress activates it
What are the 3 fissures on the anterior surface of the medulla?
- Anterior median fissure
- Ventrolateral sulcus
- Posteriolateral sulcus
Function of the medulla?
Autonomic functions
- Vomiting, sneezing
- Controls ventilation
What structures also pass though the cavernous sinus?
Oculomotor
Trochlear
Ophthalmic trigeminal
Maxillary
Carotid (internal)
Abducens
Describe the tongue innervation?
Movement: hypoglossal
Posterior 1/3: Sensory and taste is glossopharyngeal
Anterior 2/3: sensory - Trigeminal (V3 mandibular)
Taste: Facial nerve
