Insulated by Scwann cells and Oligodendrocytes

How do neurons arise when you are a foetus?
- neurons arise in the germinal matrix
- they then migrate to the cortical sub plate and wait
- while we are a foetus some of these neurons will be myelinating
How heavy is our brain and how much blood does it use?
1.3 kg (2.3% of body mass)
Uses 20% blood supply and oxygen
Generates 23 watts
What are 3 reflexes that indicates normal development for a baby?
- Rooting reflex (turn head and mouth in direction of stroking cheek)
- Sucking reflex (babies will suck an object that touches the lips)
- Grasping/palmar reflex (babies grasp objects pressed against palms)
How does vision and hearing develop as a new born?
- see objects best 7-9 inches from eyes
- lack peripheral vision
- can track movement
- by three months can see most visible colours
How does smell and taste develop as a new born?
- smell is well developed by birth
- facial expressions to different odours
- taste is sensitive at birth
- prefer sweet
What does the left hemisphere of the brain control?
Verbal: speaking, reading, thinking, reasoning
What does the right hemisphere of the brain control?
Nonverbal: spatial relationships, patterns/drawing, music, emotional expression
Why is folic acid important for a mother when pregnant?
Reduces the risk of Spina Bifida
What are three red flags for a baby Neuro development?
- being right or left handed before 3 years old
- no speech by 18 months
-can’t sit unsupported by 12 months
