The Nervous System Lecture Notes Flashcards
Central nervous system
The bodies decision-maker; consists of the brain and the spinal cord.
The nervous system
Bodies communication and control center. It is an electrochemical system and it is a fast communication system compared to the endocrine system
Peripheral nervous system
Others information from the body and send it to the brain. It also transmits impulses from the brain to other parts of the body
Nerves
Bundles of axons (like electrical cables) that connect the central nervous system with muscles, glands and sensory organs
Afferent nerves
Nerves that bring information to the brain
efferent nerves
Nerves hat carry messages from the brain out to the body
Somatic nervous system
Controls the body skeletal muscles (mostly voluntary movements)
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
Controls glands and muscles of internal organs (such as the hearts and intestines). It is mostly involuntary muscle movement
Sympathetic nervous system
Rouses or speeds up the body. For example, it speeds up heart rate and breathing and increases blood pressure
Parasympathetic nervous system
Calms or slows down the body
Homeostasis
A steady or balanced internal state. Examples include, the bodies regulation of body temperature, blood oxygen, blood pressure, blood sugar, blood pH etc. Homeostasis use a negative feedback loop
Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus is the main homeostasis control center
The endocrine system
Communication and control system in the body. It is a slow communication system compared with the nervous system.it is controlled by the nervous system
Glands
Secretes hormones (chemical messengers) into the bloodstream which carry messages to other parts of the body affecting tissues, behavior and emotions
Pituitary gland
Located deep in the brain the endocrine system control center (master gland). It also influences growth and sends messages to other glands to release hormones. Is controlled by the hypothalamus
