The nervous system Flashcards
the 5 senses are?
hear touch taste sight smell
nerve cells
work electro chemically;
signals jump chemically and join electrically
send impulses to synapses via ions
difference in voltage case impulse from axon to synapse (action potential)
what level does a stimulus need to reach to be detected?
the sensory threshold
sensory adaption
repeated stimuli so not noticed
no control over it
eg. clothes on body or watch
habituation
decrease in physiological and behavioural response from repeated exposure
under your conscious control
eg. tuning in and out of conversations at a party
central nervous system comprises of?
brain
spine
has relay neurones
peripheral nervous system contains?
nerves outside CNS
responsible for reflex
contains sensory & motor neurones
stimulus to brain uses?
sensory neurones
reaction from brain to muscles uses?
motor neurones
autonomic nervous system
outside our conscious control
blinking, breathing, heartbeat etc
highly self regulating
maintain levels and balance of body systems- homeostasis
neuro hormonal -combination of neurones and hormone transmitters
2 subdivisons
sympathetic & parasympathetic
autonomic nervous system - sympathetic
responsible for preparing us for action
eg secreting adrenaline
autonomic nervous system- parasympathetic
returns body o normal levels
