big gap between the two = under confidence and can lead to aggressive assertiveness(common in new captain)

affected by: environment, family, friends, culture, media, self ideal

selfish attitudes may have an impact of crew performances
Attitude and self discipline
self discipline- ability to control feelings and overcome weakness must be disciplined in: training SOP's flight preparation sleep evaluation
attitudes have big impact on discipline
most hazardous/ dangerous attitudes for a flight deck
impulsiveness invulnerability macho carelessness complacency anti authoritarian resignation
behaviour
combination of personality, attitude and the environment
can change on a daily basis
behaviour needs to adapt to time and place

3 egos:
parent ego- behaviours thought and feelings taken from parents which can be judgemental or patronising
adult ego- direct response to current situation
child ego- behaviours thoughts and feelings replayed from childhood

pres-on-its- (over motivation) one of most dangerous forms of motivation in aviation. eg. captain determined to achieve regardless of any other considerations
Maslow hierarchy of needs
base of triangle are the needs that have to be met first
once lower levels satisfied next assumes priority
people at top of pyramid: autonomous, not influenced by pressure, healthy respect for others
