The Nature–Nurture Debate - [Genes] Flashcards
What is the genotype?
The genetic constitution of an individual.
What is the phenotype?
The result of interaction between inherited characteristics & the environment.
Nature is?
Inherited characteristics.
Nurture is?
Experiences.
Psychologists are interested in separating?
Nature from nurture.
Why are psychologists interested in separating nature from nurture?
Because they want to find causes for behaviour.
What do we mean by ‘effects of nature on behaviour’?
The influence of genes and other biological structures on behaviour.
What needs to be considered in order to discuss someone’s nature?
The effects of neurotransmitter functioning, brain structure, genetic constitution, etc.
The biological approach provides much information about?
The way ‘nature’ influences behaviour.
What do we mean by ‘effects of nurture on behaviour’?
The effects of everything other than biological aspects on behaviour.
Examples of factors other than biological aspects?
Upbringing, schooling, peer-group influences, position in the family, social influences, cultural influences, etc.
Many areas in psychology are studied by?
Looking at how nature and nurture interact to produce a certain behaviour.
Briefly explain stress using aspects of both nature and nurture.
Stress arises when people think that they don’t have the resources to cope. Stress involves a biological reaction that gets the body ready to ‘fight or flight’. There is something in the environment that triggers this biological reaction.
