What are neuroses?
Mental health problems in individuals who are aware that they have difficulties & are capable of having insight into these problems to hellp themselves get better.
What did Freud look for to explain neuroses?
Problems in the early lives of patients.
What did think about neuroses at first?
He thought of them as neural problems rather than mental problems.
Neural?
To do with the nerves.
Mental?
To do with the mind.
Examples of neuroses?
- phobias
- some types of depression
- anxiety
What are psychoses?
Mental health problems in individuals where they aren’t aware of their & don’t have the insight to help themselves to get better because of the nature of the problems.
A psychosis is…
… a break from reality.
What is an example of psychosis?
Schizophrenia
Why did Freud only treat patients with neuroses, and not psychoses?
Because his ‘cure’ needed patients who could gain insight into their problems.
What was a particular neurosis that Freud thought was interesting?
Hysteria.
What is hysteria?
A condition where people experience physical symptoms that have a psychological cause.
What are hysterical symptoms?
Physical symptoms that have no physical cause.
What happened to Anna O?
She had difficulties in speaking & listening, and some minor paralyses, with no apparent physical cause.
