1) the id
2) the ego
3) the superego
What is the id?
It’s the part of the personality we are born with.
It’s the demanding part - an infant is all ‘I want’ ,and demands to be satisfied.
Where is the id?
In the unconscious.
Why is the id said to be situated in the unconscious?
Because demands are not conscious, for e.g. a baby knows what it wants but it knows this unconsciously.
What does the id work on?
The pleasure principle.
What is the ego?
The rational part of the personality.
What does the ego work on?
The reality principles.
What does the ego try to do?
It tries to obtain for the id what the id wants.
The ego is part of the personality that…
… works out how to satisfy the person.
When does the ego begin developing?
At around 18 months.
When does the superego develop?
During the phallic stage, at around 4 years.
What does the superego work on?
The morality principle.
What is the superego made up of?
The conscience & the ego ideal.
What is the ego ideal?
The idea people have of what they should be like.
