Genetic Drift Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic drift?
A
The way that, when an organism inherits 50% of the genes from the father & 50% from the mother, there are chance factors involved regarding which genes are inherited.
2
Q
What does the element of chance mean?
A
That some genes are lost.
3
Q
What happens if genes are lost?
A
Genetic variation is reduced, because the genes that are available to be inherited are reduced.
4
Q
What did Kimura (1968) think about genetic drift?
A
That it has quite an important role to play, with many genetic changes being due to genetic drift.
