The Muscular System Flashcards
1
Q
What are the characteristics of muscle
A
- Excitability- responds to external stimuli (hormones/ nervous stimuli)
- Contractibility - actively shortens along longitudinal axis
- Extensibility- can stretch beyond original length, without tearing
- Elasticity- recoils to its original shape
2
Q
Describe the Muscle Organ
A
- The complete actions of the organ is the result of the action of individual cells
- Muscle organ consist of:
Muscle fibers(cells) + connective tissue + nervous tissue + epithelial tissue
3
Q
What is the function of the muscle
A
Changing chemical energy into mechanical energy
- the chemical energy for the cell is ATP
4
Q
What does the mechanical energy of muscle allow us to do
A
- Produce skeletal/ skin movement
- Maintains posture/ body position/ joints
- Supports soft tissues
- Regulating incoming and outgoing material; move material along tract
- Maintains body temperature
5
Q
Describe Skeletal (somatic) Muscle
A
- Striations
- Cylindrical fibers
- Multiple, peripheral nuclei
- Voluntary control
- Cannot divide
- Will fatigue over time
- Attached to skeleton and skin
6
Q
Every Muscle organ has…
A
- At least one artery, one vein and one nerve
- Muscle cells
- bundles of muscle cell
- Connective tissue wraps the muscle organ into multiple “tubes within a tube”
7
Q
What do the arteries, veins and nerves do for the muscle organ
A
- Travels within connective tissue to cells
- Activate for contraction
- Provide blood for cells
8
Q
Describe the muscle hierarchy (largest to smallest)
A
- Muscle organ
- Fascicle
- Muscle Fiber (cell)
- Myofibril
- Myofilament
9
Q
Describe Muscle Origin
A
- muscle attachment closest to the midline
- more proximal region of the body
- less moveable, more stable
10
Q
Describe Muscle insertion
A
- muscle attachment furthest from the body
- more distal
- more moveable
- can be attached to the skin
