Activity 6 Flashcards
How many bones in the human skeleton? In the Axial? In the Appendicular?
206 in the human skeleton
80 in the axial
126 in the appendicular
what bones does the axial skeleton consist of?
skull, vertebral column, sternum, ribs
What are the 6 bone shapes
- Long bone
- short bone
- flat bone
- pneumatized bone
- sesamoid bone
- sutural (wormian) bone
- Irregular
What are the two types of osseous tissue?
Spongy
Compact
What are osteons? what do they do?
precise and structured organization of compact bone
Provide strength to the bones
What is the purpose of the honeycomb like structure of spongy bone?
transmit weight, form cavities, make the bone more lightweight
What are the two methods of bone growth?
Interstitial and Appositional
What do all connective tissues derive from?
Mesenchyme- embryonic connective tissue
Intramembranous ossification
examples?
How does it occur? Grow?
- Occurs in dermal bones
- flat bones of the skull, bones that develop in muscle or tendons- sesamoid bones
- occurs directly from mesenchyme without, formation of initial hyaline cartilage model
- only grows by appositional growth
- tracing
Endochondral ossification
examples?
How does it occur? Grow?
- most bones, long bones
femur, humerus, phalanges - bone tissue replaces initial hyaline cartilage model, hyaline cartilage remains as articular cartilage
- grows by both appositional and interstitial growth
-tracing
