The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system?
A secondary transport system. A one-way system of dead-ending vessels and lymph nodes
What are lymph nodes?
Swellings in lymph vessels
What is the function of lymph nodes?
Lymph nodes help fight infections
How do lymph nodes fight infections?
- Filter bacteria from lymph as it passes through
- Store lymphocytes (WBCs), some kill micro-organisms and others produce antibodies
What is tissue fluid (extra cellular fluid)?
Plasma without RBCs, platelets or large proteins with less WBCs. It surrounds all body cells and helps transport materials in and out of cells
What is the fluid in the lymphatic system called?
Lymph
How does lymph move in lymph vessels?
- Muscles in vessel walls
- General body movements
How is the direction of lymph flow controlled?
Valves
Where do smaller lymph vessels join to?
The thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct. These are subclavian valves
What are functions of the lymphatic system?
- To defend against against infection
- To transport fat
