The integumentary system Flashcards
What are the roles of the integumentary system?
Protection
thermoregulation
Cutaneous sensation
Excretion
Absorption
Vitamin D synthesis
What are the three layers of skin?
Hypodermis
Dermis
Epidermis
What is the role of the hypodermis?
Attached underlying bone + muscle by connective tissue
Functions as protective cushion
What is the role of the dermis?
Origin point for blood vessels, nerves, glands, hair follicles
Provides nutrients for epidermal growth
Arrector pili muscles allow hair to stand up
Eccrine sweat glands help with thermoregulation
Apocrine sweat glands release sweat and lipids/proteins
What is the role of the epidermis?
Forms a waterproof barrier
What are the cells are their roles of the epidermis?
Kertinocytes- tough, fibrous proteins, protects skin
Melanocyte - Produce melanin protein
Langerhans- Participate in immune response
Merkel - Participate in detecting different aspects of touch sensation
What is the process of vitamin D synthesis?
Exposure to sunlight -> activation of 7-dehydrocholesterol -> enzymes in liver/kidney modify module -> calcitriol produced
