Blood tisdues Flashcards
What are the functions of blood?
Transportation
Regulation
Protection
What are the components of blood?
Plasma (54%)
Red blood cells (45%)
White blood cells + platelets (1%)
What is the role of blood plasma?
Carries CO2 in the form of carbonic acid
What is the role of platelets?
Form a platelet plug and promote clotting
What is the role of red blood cells?
Carry haemoglobin carrying O2, carries CO2 to lungs
What are the granular leukocytes (type of white blood cells) and their roles?
Neutrophils (engulf bacteria via phagocytosis)
Basophils (release chemicals and intensify the inflammatory response)
Eosinophils (release histaminase to reduce inflammation)
What are the agranular leukocytes (white blood cells) and their roles?
Lymphocytes (T+B cells involved in adaptive immunity)
Monocytes (Destroy microbes by phagocytosis)
What is the blood clotting pathway?
1.Vessel injury
2.Platelets become sticky
3.Vasoconstriction
4.Plug formation
5.Extrinsic+Intrinsic pathway
6.Release of prothrombinase starts common pathway
7.Thrombin activation
8.Clot formation
9.Clot retraction
10.Repair
5.Fibrinolysis
