The digestive system Flashcards
Describe the gastrointestinal tract
Mouth
Pharynx
Oesophagus
Stomach
Small intestine (duodenom, jejenum, ileum)
Large intestine
What are the accessory organs?
Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, biliary apparatus, pancreas
What occurs in ingestion?
Putting food in our mouth, using our teeth, tongues and saliva to break it down
What occurs in secretion?
The oesophagus secretes mucus to help food to travel to the stomach
What occurs in motility?
The stomach churns to help break down the food and mix the digestive enzymes
What happens in digestion?
HCL is released to denature proteins and kill pathogens
Pepsin is produced to break down proteins
The duodenom continues digestion through secretion from liver, gall bladder, pancreas
What happens in absorption?
Jejunum and ileum absorb the majority of nutrients and water
What happens in defacation?
Large intestine connects small intestine and rectum and absorb last parts of water and salts
It is structured as:
Cecum, ascending column, transverse column, descending column, sigmoid column, rectum
Ileocecum valve prevents content of large intestine entering small intestine
