The Immune System: Key Terms Flashcards
What is cell signalling?
communication between cells e.g. hormones
What are neutrophils?
a type of phagocyte
What are opsonins?
a molecule that binds to surface of pathogens which makes it easier for phagocyte (or neutrophil) to engulf them
What are phagosomes?
phagocytic vacuole / vesicle
What are cytokines?
cell signalling proteins released by white blood cells that help coordinate the immune response
What are interleukines?
a type of cytokine
e.g., t helper cell will release
interleukine (a cytokine) which will bind to a specific recepter on b-lymphocyte
will which activate
What are agglutinins?
a type of antibody that sticks antigens together - which helps phagocytes destroy many pathogens at once
What are antitoxins?
a type of antibody that counteracts a toxin
