Plant Defences Against Pathogens Flashcards
How do plants protect themselves from pathogens?
they produce antimicrobial chemicals
What do antimicrobial chemicals do?
they target differences between plant cells and pathogens
e.g. cell wall in -
plants = cellulose
fungi = chitin
bacteria - peptidoglycan
What do antimicrobial chemicals kill?
they kill the pathogens
What can these chemical stop?
growth of the plants
What physical barriers do plants have?
a waxy cuticle / bark which acts as a barrier to stop pathogens entering
What happens if a plant becomes infected by a pathogen?
it spreads between cells via the plasmodesmata
How do plants block their plasmodesmata?
with a carbohydrate called callose = callose deposition
