Active & Passive Immunity Flashcards
What is active immunity?
when you make your own antibodies
there are two types: natural and artificial
natural - primary response and produces antibodies + memory cells
artificial - vaccination - produces memory cells
What is passive immunity?
when you are given antibodies by another organism
natural - antibodies are given to children by mother e.g. placenta or breast milk
artificial - given someone else’s antibodies e.g. blood transfusion
What are the differences between active and passive immunity?
active -
immunity is slow
it is long term (memory cells stay long)
make memory cells
exposed to the antigen for immunity
passive -
fast protection
short term bc antibodies are foreign
dont make memory cells
no immunity
