The human microbiome Flashcards
Week 2
Name some upper respiratory tract commensals
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Staph. aureus
- Staph. epidermis
- Strep. pneumoniae
Factors effecting the microbiome
Age, environment, genetics, diet, lifestyle, immune response, microbial co-adaptation
When will commensals cause infection?
- Spread to sterile parts of the body
- Expand population size and disturb balance (e.g. through antibiotic use)
What is a colonization resistor?
Species with the same metabolic properties as pathogen, can compete with pathogen
Dysbiosis =
Microbial imbalance or maladaptation on or inside the body
Prebiotics
non-digestible good ingredient that beneficially affects host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon
Probiotics
living non-pathogenic organisms used as food ingredients to benefit hosts’ health
