the highlands Flashcards
in the years before the war what were landowners looking to do
increase there profits - they chose to move crofters to new villages by the coast where they would receive land but also be able to work in the fishing industry
(pre war) what was the crofters response to the landowners decision and how accessible was land
crafting land was scarce and the crofters resented how landowners were moving away from traditional ways.
with less land available for crafting, highlanders often migrated to the central belt
durring the time of recruitment what did some highland men believe
durring the time of recruitment some highland men believed they would receive crafting land at the end of the war
what did landowners do durring the war
where did the government go wrong
landowners did not maintain there estates well during the war
the government took quality land that could have been used for food production and turned it over for sheep and catle grazing
what were crofters given
DORA granting local authority’s the right to turn land over for food production meant that land in the highlands was taken from landowners and distributed amongst crofters - they where given a short term tenancy agreement until the end of the war
after the was - what had left highlanders encouraged
Lloyd George wrote in the 1918 liberal party manifesto ‘it was the duty of the government to provide land for men who had served in the war’
what did some men refused to do when the war ended and what happened as a result
some crofters refused to leave the land they had acquired under dora as specified in there tenancy agreement
this led to land raids as some felt they had no option but to grab the land they could
land raids involved men occupying an area they believed they had the right to work on without the current land owners permission - they hoped to gain publicity and public sympathy for there cause
what was the governments response to the land raids?
the passing of the Land Settlement Act of 1919 which stated that land would be made available for men who had served in the war - but there was the issue of how the government would actually obtain this land
