what was Scottish agriculture like prior to the great war?
scottish agriculture did quite well before the war - profits for farmers was good however international trade was vital
what was britain not before the war and how much days of food each week could we produce ourselves
britain was not self sufficient before the war
home produced food could only feed the Scottish population for 2 days each week and the other 5 days worth of food had to come from abroad
during the war what did germany do with particular knowlage
German new of britains lack of self sufficiency and so purposely targeted ships carrying food imports to britain in an attempt to starve the country and win the war
through DORA what did the government allow and try to promote
the government tries to promote self suficiancy and through DORA local councils had the ability to bring land under cultivation however the amount of farmable land in scotland only increased by 5% - this was not enough
during the war where were agricultural imports moved to and imports of what foods fell
durring the war agricultural imports to scotland where moved from the east to west cost however imports of goods such as oats, barely, oatmeal, eggs and butter all fell

the main agricultural controbution to the war effort was sheep farming
it provided full time employment and high wages
from 1916 the government bought all wool sheared from sheep for blankets and uniforms
by 1918 sheep prices were 60% higher than in 1914
what happened to farming post war
farming went into decline post war partly due to foreign competition
cheap foreign imports of food like refrigerated meat from Argentina, frozen lamb and tinned fruit from Australia and new Zealand
what did the government introduce in 1920 - when and why was it scrapped
the government introduced the agriculture act 1920 in an attempt to maintain food prices and production but this had to be scrapped in 1921 due to the poor state of the economy
